South Devons peak at 7500gns at Exeter
South Devon bulls sold to a high of 7500gns at Exeter Livestock Centre on Wednesday (6th April) with a solid trade throughout.
In the show ring under the eye of judge Stewart Ward from Besowsa, Truro, Cornwall, Peter & Ashley Rowe from Menheniot, Cornwall, commanded both the female and male sections, winning champion, reserve and best pair of females; and then taking the Roskymer cup for champion male with Trewint Cartier, and the Rowe cup for reserve champion to Trewint Jasper Celtic 2, with both then awarded the Macfarlane Cup for best pair. The Thornton Cup, awarded to the bull with the highest combined points on Breedplan performance and inspection points went to George & Ann Dart’s AI Z Woodhayes Inquest 4 from Cullompton Devon, a homozygous polled bull by Z Hawkley Poll Inquest.
In the sale ring and hitting the high note of 7500gns was Conam Dman from first time show and sale exhibitor Connor Whitehead, Telford Shropshire. Having established his own herd of just three cows in 2014, bids soared to top the sale for this son of Brafferton Kudo 7, who took the honours in the intermediate class at the 2019 National Show. Following spirited bidding, Dman was knocked down to Collacombe Farm Ltd, Tavistock, Devon.
Flying to 5000gns was the pre-sale show champion Trewint Cartier from Messrs P S & AP Rowe, Liskeard, Cornwall. A son of North View Claudius, Cartier found his home at West Prawle Farm, East Portlemouth, South Devon.

Completing the trio was Z Treguddick Edward also from Messrs Thomas. This time a son of Z Treguddick Ephraim 2, he sold to Messrs G Abel and Sons, Tavistock, Devon.
Another polled bull in the sale highlights Z Welland Valley Comrade 4 sold at 4000gns, consigned by Messrs M E & T E Broome, Market Harborough, Leicestershire. Sired by Z Welland Valley Comrade he found his new home with Wood Farm Partnership, Everdon, Northants.
4000gns was also the order of the day for March-born Trewint Santana. Again, forward from Messrs P S & A P Rowe, this Sexton Senator 21 son sold to Mr P Claridge, Tehidy, Cornwall.
Breed Secretary Caroline Poultney commented, “It was a delight to be able to hold a full show with the sale after two years without. The trade was consistently solid, with lively bidding and serious demand, and a number of potential buyers returned home with empty trailers. We hope this is a sign of a good year to come for the beef trade in general.”
