Spring Show & Sale, Exeter, 3rd April 2024

Average bull prices rose by £476 for the South Devons’ Spring Show & Sale at Exeter, rising for the seventh year in succession, and by £661 for bulling heifers.  The top price was set at 10,000 guineas with another nine bulls achieving in excess of 5,000 guineas.  Breed Secretary Caroline Poultney commented, “The breed is deservedly receiving consistently higher prices in recognition of its money-earning high ranking traits; and it’s always great to welcome new breeders!”

Autumn Show & Sale, Worcester, 3rd October 2023

The bar was set high for quality suckler females at the South Devon’s Autumn Sale at Worcester, with a full clearance of cows with calves, in-calf and maiden heifers. Prices topped at 4,000 gns with strong demand from new and returning buyers which outstripped supply. “Confidence in what this high performing native beef breed can do has shone through, and the demand was certainly there for more to be sold at good prices”, commented Breed Secretary Caroline Poultney.

Spring Show & Sale, Exeter, 2nd April 2023

Average bull prices rose by £602 for the South Devons’ Spring Show & Sale at Exeter, rising for the sixth year in succession, and making this one of the most successful breed sales this century.  The top price was set at 10,500 guineas and other well-contested bidding continued to raise the bar.  Breed Secretary Caroline Poultney commented, “It has been a tremendous sale for the breed, with confidence clearly demonstrated in the future of this native breed.  Vendors have brought forward the right type of cattle for the market and are duly rewarded.”

Dispersal of the Lumbylaw herd, Exeter, July 2022

The dispersal of the main portion of the Lumbylaw herd of over 200 South Devons was a flying success for the breed and the breeder.  After 50 years of breeding pedigree South Devons Robert & Sally Lee took the decision to retire and commissioned Kivells at Exeter to conduct the dispersal of the herd.
