Forthcoming South Devon Shows

The South Devon Herd Book Society will have a stand at the following Agricultural Shows in 2010:

Devon County Show - The Devon County Show is the largest event in the county calendar and is the perfect place to enjoy a tour of rural life. FIRST NATIONAL SHOW OF SOUTH DEVONS - 10th-12th June 2010, at the Royal Cornwall Show
With a vacuum left by the demise of the Royal Show, the South Devon Herd Book Society has decided it’s a good time to launch its annual National Show.

The idea is to provide a national focus for the breed to be shown, where the public can see exhibitors come together to compete with one another. A record level of entries is hoped for in this first year, at the Royal Cornwall Show - an agricultural show which is already a firm favourite for the breed - and there is already added interest from as far afield as Yorkshire and Scotland.

The Society is providing financial assistance to exhibitors from outside Devon and Cornwall, and an increase in prize-money. In addition there will be events happening in the Society’s marquee, and the staging of the annual Young Handler Competition, sponsored by Towergate Lloyd & Whyte, which is held for younger enthusiasts of the breed.

After 2010, the National Show will move eastwards to a venue to be confirmed, and will then “tour” the country at a different agricultural show each year, giving as many people as possible the opportunity to participate.

This new event on the South Devon calendar comes at a time when the expansion of the breed reaches a new high in popularity. The Society’s membership has grown to over 750, an increase of 25% in four years, and nearly 4,000 females are registered as pedigree each year. Average values for male and female breeding cattle have risen greatly in line with the increased demand, and recognition of the breed’s commercial qualities from beef producers and retailers alike.
