A strong line of pedigree bulls and heifers at the South Devon Midland Club’s 24th annual sale at Stratford brought interest from across the country, with a good trade for well-structured cattle near to profit. A new record of 8,500 guineas was achieved for the Club Sale – an increase of 2,300 guineas, with a new average for bulls of £3,668 – an increase of £439!
Judge Roger Clemens, Breed Society President from Wadebridge, Cornwall, picked Lumbylaw Galahad 15 from A R Lee, Alnwick, Northumberland, as his Champion. The bull is out of a home-bred cow by Sexton Excalibur 16. Knowlhill Excalibur 2 from A E J & F J Claridge, Middle Clayden, Buckinghamshire, was Reserve Champion and with similar bloodlines on the sire side, going back to Godworthy Excalibur.
In the sale ring there was good demand for bulls, and fierce competition for M E & T E Broome’s Welland Valley Jerome (T), a bull by Erme Jerome out of Welland Valley Dorothy 2, who sold to Mr W H D Scott, from Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucestershire for 8,500 guineas. Next highest price was for M & M Rushbrooke’s polled bull Z Brettles SAS Intrepid (T) who sold for 5,200 guineas to Mr & Mrs J A Hopkins from Somerset; followed by A R Lee’s Lumbylaw Leo 71 from a very successful breeding line, who sold to W L Pickford & Son, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, for 5,000 guineas.
In the heifer judging, Mr W H D Scott’s AI Grove Dandelion 28 took top place in the 2009 born section, a classy heifer by Trewint Henry 1. A E J & F J Claridge’s Knowlhill Rose 10, by the same sire as the Reserve Breed Champion, Sexton Excalibur 7, was placed second. She went on to sell at the top price of 2,450 guineas in her section to Mrs J Archer, North Tuddenham, Norfolk.
In the 2010 born heifer section, A & P Rickett’s Juniper Kingcup 1 was placed first, a striking yearling heifer by Juniper Ivanhoe. She sold at 1,120 guineas, top price in her section, to D Holt, Harpenden, Hertfordshire.
A strong trade in a consignment of cows with calves at foot from Mr & Mrs Pratt, Stourport-on-Severn, saw a top price of 2,550 guineas to Roger and Tom Elliott, from Kislingbury, Northamptonshire.
Averages: 15 bulls £3,668; halter-broken bulling heifers £1,458; halter-broken maiden heifers £1,006; cows with calves at foot £2,121
