A good quality entry of pedigree South Devons were forward at the Society’s Autumn Sale at Bristol, together with the Dispersal of the St Anthony her
d from the Roseland Peninsula in Cornwall on behalf of the Lyons Grant-Dalton partnership.
Judge, Mr Douglas Scott from Moreton-in-Marsh in Gloucestershire, selected ET Enterprise Justice as his Male Champion. From David Irving’s Enterprise herd in Dumfriesshire, the bull is an embryo transplant from Kestle Dorothy 64, and by Sexton Centurion, with bloodlines going back to the Stretchford and Trevowah herds. He went on to sell for 3600 guineas to Mr J Gurney from Milton Keynes.
Female Champion came from The Tully Partnership’s herd from Brixham in Devon, a polled in-calf heifer, Z AI Waddeton Norman Countess 128, by the Society’s Promising Young Bull Z AI Haughton SAS Joe Louis 1, and out of a Waddeton cow with bloodlines from the Edmeston herd. The heifer was top-priced female at 3800 guineas, selling to D Trewern & Son from Penzance in Cornwall.
In the Performance and Inspection classes, Best Male was Newquay breeder Roger Rundle’s Kestle Leo 9 by Lumbylaw Leo 2, and Best Female was M E & T E Broome’s Welland Valley Gem 16, a very growthy heifer by Welland Valley Hanbury 11.
In the Sale ring, buyers from across the country competed to make a near full-clearance of both bulls and females. Top priced bull was M E & T E Broome’s Welland Valley Samson, a two-year old by Erme Jerome that sold to P S & A P Rowe, Menheniot, Cornwall, for 4400 guineas. Next highest was the Judge’s entry, Z AI Grove Solomon 42, a polled bull by New Zealand sire, Z Esk Hector 21, that sold to Mr O Brewin, from Thorpe Langton in Leicestershire for 4100 guineas.
Following the top-priced Female Champion were two heifers from Roger Rundle’s Kestle herd, sired by Lumbylaw Leo 2, and winners of the Best Pair of Females in the Show, both selling to M A & C Sandbach & Son, Wadebridge, Cornwall for 3000 guineas apiece. Close behind at 2850 guineas was a two year old heifer from Leicestershire, M E & T E Broome’s Welland Valley Gem 16.
The Dispersal of the St Anthony herd of pedigree South Devons saw strong demand, especially for cows with calves at foot, which topped at 2500 guineas. Consignments from the Dispersal head for Suffolk, Essex, Oxfordshire, Gwent and Dorset, and will provide excellent foundation suckler stock for new and established herds alike.
