The South Devons’ National Herd Competition has recently been judged, which involved three judges appointed by the Society travelling over 1,700 miles in eight days, from Devon up to the West Midlands and into Scotland, then south from Northumberland to Essex, and back across to Cornwall.
The judges found their winning herd in Cornwall, near Liskeard. Peter & Ashley Rowe’s Trewint herd of pedigree South Devons is a former winner of the Competition, and standards are still very high at Trewint where South Devons are bred for consistency and uniformity, whilst maintaining the breed’s beefy characteristics and docility.
The farm runs on 220 acres of pasture, and the cattle are reared as grass-fed.
Naturally fleshed bulls are brought to the Society’s pedigree sales, and the Trewint name regularly features at major and local one-day shows where they have a history of big successes both in breed and interbreed classes.
Breed Secretary, Caroline Poultney, said, “It is a real credit to Peter and Ashley to win this coveted award, and is a true reflection of how the South Devon breed can perform with excellent genetics and by making the most of natural resources.”
Visitors are warmly invited to join the Society at the Rowe’s Open Day which is to be held on Monday 26th September beginning at 1.30pm. You don’t have to keep South Devons to come along! Bookings, please, to SDHBS, 01392 447494, info@sdhbs.org.uk.
