8th May 2017

SOUTH DEVONS’ AVERAGES UP AT MIDLAND CLUB SALE

This year’s Midland Club Sale saw a new venue for the South Devons, moving from Stratford to Rugby Farmers Mart at Stoneleigh, and it drew with it sellers and buyers alike from across the country.

Bull averages were well up on last year by £406, two year old heifers up by £433, and yearling heifers up by £103, reflecting the general trade and buoyant demand for the breed.

Judge Mr Phil Eustice travelled from the Trevowah herd, Newquay in Cornwall, and picked his male champion from the other end of the country, Robert Lee’s Z Lumbylaw Jupiter 40, from Alnwick, Northumberland.  This April 2015 born polled bull is by Z Sexton General 23, and out of Lumbylaw Maple 23, with great length and presence.  He went on to sell for the top price of 4,200 gns to Mr & Mrs J A Hopkins from Lympsham in Somerset.

Reserve male champion was from the same herd – Lumbylaw Mercury 16, a March 2015 born bull whose grandsires are Enterprise Condor and Sexton Conqueror 67, with Suckler Replacement Index in the top 5% and Quality Beef Index in the top 1% of the breed.  The bull was purchased at the second highest price of 4,000 gns by Mr C Hart from Loughborough, Leicestershire.

Other top bull prices were 3,400 gns for J & S White’s Broadwood Bovey, selling to A E J & F J Claridge from Middle Clayden in Buckinghamshire; and 3,300 gns for W H D Scott’s Grove Solomon 62, selling to Messrs Sargent & Waight from Pewsey, Wiltshire.

In the female section Phil Eustice’s champion was Mr A Rickett’s yearling heifer Juniper Quincey by Northwick Fortissimo and out of Juniper Carnation, herself a highly productive cow with her 13th calf due.  Reserve female champion was another yearling heifer from Mr Rickett - Juniper Quenna, by Broadwood Yealm, and out of Juniper Magenta.  Both heifers sold to new buyer F A Gates & Son from Oakham, Leicestershire who bought a total consignment of six.

A new award for breed champion was given in memory of Mrs Pat Rickett, long-serving Secretary of the Midland Club, who introduced many breeders to South Devons and contributed to the expansion of the breed outside of the south west.  The Trophy was awarded to the male champion, Z Lumbylaw Jupiter 40.
