We are delighted to announce that the winner of this year's Herd Competition is Edward Hawkins from Trull, Somerset. Edward runs the Cutsey herd with his wife Sian, and with help from his brothers William & Nick.
The dispersal of the main portion of the Lumbylaw herd of over 200 South Devons was a flying success for the breed and the breeder. After 50 years of breeding pedigree South Devons Robert & Sally Lee took the decision to retire and commissioned Kivells at Exeter to conduct the dispersal of the herd.
South Devon: first beef breed in the UK to incorporate genomic information in BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation.
With the release of results from their August 2022 BREEDPLAN evaluation, the South Devon Herd Book Society (SDHBS) has become the first beef breed using BREEDPLAN in the UK to incorporate genomic information in the calculation of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) and accuracy of their registered population.
What a huge treat it was to go and film the Tuckers and their South Devons in East Portlemouth last week. We were also lucky enough to be personally introduced to Persius and Dr Octopus, both contenders for the South Devon Herdbook Society’s National Championships at Devon County Show 2022. Good luck!
