Well known for its strong maternal and beef qualities, the South Devon is commercially placed in the modern suckler herd, both intensive and extensive. Its many attributes lend itself well to crossing with other native and continental breeds to suit individual beef producers' specific requirements, whilst also enabling the pedigree breeder to produce excellent suckler replacements and terminal sires, and top quality marbled beef.
The South Devon's renowned docility is a very important consideration for the modern beef producer who is reliant on limited labour resources. The cattle grow quickly on an early diet of plentiful rich milk, and are excellent forage converters. The beef that is produced is marbled and tender, and sought after by butchers and restaurants who recognise its premium quality. >>more
Waitrose stores in Devon and Cornwall are now selling beef on their fresh meat counters from cattle sired by pedigree registered South Devon sires, under the West Country brand. To find out if your cattle may be eligible for this scheme which carries a premium are invited to contact SDHBS.
Morrisons’ Traditional Beef Breeds include the South Devon breed – quite naturally, since numerically the breed is the third largest beef breed native to the UK. A premium of 10p/kg is payable for eligible cattle. For more information please contact SDHBS, or Woodheads.
