Cattle Health

The Society is taking a proactive position in order to help members attain the highest herd health status for their herds.  It has taken, and continues to take, advice from many different authorities, and is actively promoting two CHeCS schemes – Biobest, and the SAC’s Premium Cattle Health Scheme, which are run in conjunction with local veterinary practices.

The Council have decided to give a financial incentive to its members to encourage them to join up.

A credit of £5 will be given against registration charges, from 27th March 2007 for one year initially, for animals registered within that year from herds which can demonstrate that they are members of one or other CHeCS scheme.

Members can obtain further information about the two schemes either from their vet, or from the Society office, or from www.biobest.co.uk and www.sac.ac.uk/consultancy/pchs/

The four diseases tackled by the CHeCS Cattle Health Schemes are BVD, Johnes, IBR, and Lepto, and the Schemes enable members to take steps to eliminate the diseases, and therefore to reduce economic losses, to increase productivity, and to increase the sale value of breeding animals.  One or more diseases can be tackled as appropriate for individual herds.  Advice is also available on improving biosecurity.
