Cattle Health

The Society is taking a proactive position in order to help members attain the highest herd health status for their herds. It has taken, and continues to take advice from many different authorities, and is actively promoting membership of CHeCS approved health schemes – including Biobest Herdcare, Premium Cattle Health Scheme, and Herdsure, which are all run in conjunction with local veterinary practices.

A credit of £5 per pedigree registration may be reclaimed against registrations made during a maximum 2 year period, by Society members who are also members of a CHeCS approved health scheme and who are at least screening for Johnes Disease.

The four diseases tackled by the CHeCS Cattle Health Schemes are BVD, Johnes, IBR, and Lepto, and the Schemes enable members to take steps to eliminate the diseases, and therefore to reduce economic losses, to increase productivity, and to increase the sale value of breeding animals. One or more diseases can be tackled as appropriate for individual herds. Advice is also available on improving biosecurity.

Herd Health Declaration at time of entry to the Sale

This is a progressive opportunity to help buyers be aware of the health status of herds from which they may wish to buy stock. Information will be published in Society sale catalogues in a standardised format to avoid misinterpretation. Declarations will be displayed on vendors’ cattle pens.
